<description>It was a wonderful book. Being a first generation immigrant myself, I can understand what it is to be away from my family and dear ones and being in a foriegn land.
AM eager to see the movie. However I already have all the characters sketched in my mind. I dont want to spoil that, unless I know the movie is really worth watching!

<description>I just finished reading the book and I loved it. In fact I also gave it up a year ago and then went back to it and thought it was lovely. The characterization is brilliant which I am sure the movie could not bring forth. I shall only watch the film because of Tabu. She is so good. I still remember the scene in the book when Ashoke tells Gogol about the origin of his name - it was written so well.</description>

		<description>Looking forward to this one.

On the whole I do like Mira Nair's movies even though I often find her oversimplifying and pandering to western audiences. Maybe it works.
As far as the book is concerned the theme itself is a big turn off for me.

How come I missed this festival? When was it held?

<description>Suyo, Even I am annoyed with myself that I haven't read this novel. For that matter, I've barely read 3 novels this year. I seriously wish I had more time, but I have resolved to read The Namesake and The Kite Runner definitely by this Christmas. Was reading a few pages of Namesake on the train yesterday and I am totally gobsmacked by the utter subtlety in the lady's writing. In fact the 20 or so pages I read (Gogol's christening and Ashima's father's death), I kept on thinking why the movie couldn't stick to the book for atleast some pivotal dramatic sequences like Ashima forgetting her bag of shopping-for-her-Indian-relatives on the metro but felt bonded to the city in a strange way when she got it back from Lost and Found. Or the very next day of hearing about her father's demise how she purposely boarded the Metro and left the bag of shopping she did for him...there's so much of anguish and distress and haplessness in these sequences I was absolutely surprised the film just leaped over such brilliant nuggets of character and plot development.

Dunno how low I'd rate the movie after I've read the whole book. Given how things are going, not very high I suppose. I have a nagging feeling Mira Nair's done quite a rush job with the movie, which is quite sad really as the book's quite a classic.

Cheers!

<description>Namesake is one of my favorite books, and i am anoyed you havent read it yet :p

that said, i am not expecting too much from mira nair - she has a great talent to ruin movies :) - but given your review, I think there's hope that she might have done a wee bit justice to this magnificient book.

Superlative karan review here.
